Sedum
(Make sure you scroll all the way down for info on a free 16x20 print from iPrintfromhome.com!)
As everything creative is cyclical with me I seem to be heading back into my photography phase. These cycles of mine are short, they seem to last about 2 1/2 weeks and go from drawing to painting to sewing to digital to photography. Sewing and painting have fallen out of the cycle temporarily, for my little one is now climbing on furniture and has entered her fearless stage.
It is exciting for me to watch her struggle, and then, through her efforts, gain that sense of triumph and accomplishment when she manages to reach her goal.
And now I have a tremendous amount of tension in my shoulders neck and jaw from watching and preventing her from standing on furniture and klunking herself into everything. I certainly took it for granted when I could set things on the countertop or table up out of her reach. In a matter of a few weeks it seems there is nothing that holds her back. Needless to say projects like sewing and painting that need time and focus, not to mention a safe environment where a busy and curious little-one can't run amouk, will have to wait.
So I am feeling the pull back to photography. I enjoy photographing things in my garden but what I really love is photographing people. Little girl is so busy that it's very difficult to practice on her, and when she sees me with the camera she does everything in her power to look away. She's not camera shy, just sick of Mama and her camera. It's easier when Daddy is distracting her in play, and I look for those opportunities.
I learn a lot from browsing the photos of others (especially Moms) on Flickr, and on sites like Shutter SIsters and others.
Well, I'm off to accomplish some things while she naps.
I hope you find a little "me" time in your day today!

Peach Daylily
I spent a good part of May busy in my garden. In fact nearly every Facebook status update I posted was "Carolyn is working in the garden."
I planted annuals and perennials, shade lovers and sunworshippers, vegetables and herbs.
Well, we had a pretty blah spring around these parts, cool and clammy and cloudy, and my garden shows it. Because it looks blah too. By this time last year my garden was a riot of color, with flowers so abundant the bees and hummingbirds were loving life!
But this year, well, not so good. With a few exceptions, like this daylily. Last year I found a patch of daylilies in a small wooded area behind my house. It's actually on my neighbors property... a neglected place that is overgrown with tree saplings, wild raspberries and thorns. The growth overhead was so dense they couldn't get any sunlight, and probably hadn't bloomed for years. So I sneakily dug them up and placed then in a sunnier spot nearby on my property. And this morning I was greeted by this little pretty. She is surrounded by the rest of the rescued lilies, at this moment laden with buds just waiting to blossom.
... and all she needed was a little attention and a little sunshine.
Could something or someone in your life use a little attention and sunshine? Maybe it's YOU.
I hope to find a little sunshine in your day today!

"Bees" Fabric Swatches
Did you know you can design your own fabric over at Spoonflower? When I stumbled upon this knowledge I thought I'd died and went to creative heaven!!! Imagine the possibilites! Makes my head spin just thinking about it!
The only thing is it's not exactly cheap, but OMG: I CAN PUT MY OWN DESIGNS ON FABRIC!!!
When my swatches arrived I literally tore open the envelope... they came out great. I can add exclusive fabric to my etsy shop, and yes, there is a market for this, even though it's a bit pricey. I am so excited!
The bee's came out super cute...but these are 8x8 swatches and I'm wondering if they would look better small and repeated more frequently... do you know what I mean? Let me know what you think...

Funky Afro Lady

When I was a young girl growing up in and around Motown I wanted to look like this. Unfortunately this was impossible, because little blond Polish girls don't grow good Afro's.
The phrase is a play on the language of the fashion industry when a new color trend emerges: ("grey is the new black"; "brown is the new black" etc...)
She's an image that started as a doodle several years ago. She evolved into a painting, and now, thanks to the world of digital, is now an 8x10 poster-style art print. She's available at Crazy Funky Cool. I hope to develop several variations of her in the near future.
In other news: today is the day I have long waited for: I am FINALLY going to get my iPhone. I have been an Apple FREAK for over 20 years. I think this is one of those techy devices that lives up to the hype... anyone I know who has one is totally in love with it. Being such a Mac geek I think it will tie in seamlessly with my digital world. I'm not happy that I HAVE to switch phone companies (I believe Congress is actually looking into the legality of this), but it's not that big of a deal.
My husband is not a sucker to the hype like I am. He uses his company-provided Blackberry (which has a totally LAME interface) and he's ok with it. So, whatever!
But: I AM SO EXCITED!
Shallow? Yes.
But YAY!!!!

I've Been...
I 've been:
...Playing a lot out side with this little person.
...enjoying the Tiger's taking 2 games from the Cubs the last couple of days (game 3 is today. GO TIGERS!)
...thankful for central air-conditioning with temps in the 90's outside!
... staying true to my plan of incorporating to-do lists into my day in order to get things done.
...looking forward to spending Friday with my husband and daughter.
...looking forward to spending Friday evening with my girlfriends.
...eating too many chips and too much junk and need to make up some cool summer salads!
... speaking of summer food I'm thinking it's time for some kabobs on the grill!
... not posting as frequently here as I need to, but now that we work with lists I should start doing a better job!
...working almost entirely in digital (for now)
...acknowledging that I have to get the Adobe Creative Suite...I've grown out of PSE6, but it has served me well.
...realizing it is hard to set aside a little $ each week as a SAHM in order to save for something like the Adobe Creative Suite! ($$$)
...getting used to the Safari update (my web browser).
... and it's 7:15am and I hear my little girl waking...

Blog Refresh, Promo ideas
Just a quick post before Little Girl wakes up from her nap:
I'm doing a blog refresh: tidying up the side bar, organizing how & who I link to.
I AM PLEASED TO ANNOUNCE that I am now offering a place for sponsers to advertise on my sidebar (do you have an online shop???) for either a very reasonable monthly rate or by swapping ads (You include my ad on your blog, I'll include you on mine).
I design custom clickable ad graphics which are available in my shop. You can place these ads on your own blog or use them to advertise yourself on other blogs (like mine!). I plan on adding more premade designs (which can feature the name of your shop) or I can make one with your image/logo/photo etc especially for you. Or you can forward me your clickable ad via an email. AVAILABLE NOW in my shop.
If you'd like to swap ads please leave me a comment and I we can get in touch via email.
of course I will still be keeping a favorite blog list, but if you'd really like to be noticed consider an ad!

Cute Little Bee CLock Pink
Spending the day preparing for our little Father's Day Cookout tomorrow! I've also been trying to update my CafePress Shop, but it's a very tedious process, which probably explains why I've neglected it for so long! But it's well worth it. CafePress does quality work on the products it produces, and it's so fun to see my designs on functional items like totes and tiles and magnets and clothing, and yes, clocks! (Isn't this CUTE!!!)
Artists, do you have a CafePress store? If so I'd LOVE to see it, and I invite you to visit mine!
I'm working on a lot of digital stuff. I feel as though I'm putting a lot of time into it... a photographer recently told me that it's not unusual to take a hundred snapshots in order to get that one awesome photograph! I think the same holds true for art and design... I feel like I'm trying so many different things, and for the 99 things that don't work I get that 1 design that just feels right, the one that really works, and it feels SO GOOD!
Well, I should get back to my cookout preparations.
Happy Father's Day to all of the Daddy's out there! You are so needed and so appreciated!!!

Random Thoughts
Having more digital fun lately, but still thinking I need to learn vector illustration... ugh! It's just that my drawings USUALLY have so much flat color, and I want the lines to be crisp and sharp.
which brings up my peeve with Blogger and Facebook, well, maybe it's any and all times I post web images: the quality SUCKS! Even though I'm using web safe colors I'm still getting a lot of quality loss and my drawings look dull and have these annoying speckles, not at all what they look like in photoshop. sigh. It's so annoying to create something that looks pretty awesome, then to have the quality get all mucked up when you post it! For example: my new banner looks all speckly, and my little av looks so blurry! Argh!!!
will the weather EVER get warm and sunny here in Michigan??? It's been clammy and cloudy and blah! Summer, where are you???
I'm trying to get better at leaving comments on blogs I visit. It's so gratifying to get a comment... I mean, I'd keep blogging with or without them, but it's nice to hear from other bloggers out there, to see what they're up to, etc...
I want to TRY to be a little more structured in my days. I am a very disorganized person, so I really need to make task lists for myself, for both work and domestic duties. Otherwise it feels like I'm spinning my wheels. It truly feels good to complete a task and cross it off the list... Yes, I REALLY need to create lists...
FUTURE PLANS:
In the near future I want to add fabric with my own designs on it to my shop... I have so many potential ideas!
I still want to add a couple digital element kits (for digital scrapbookers) to my Etsy Shop. (I've been wanting to do this for a few months now... hmmmm, maybe if I had put that on the to-do list I would have done it by now! lol!)
I plan on adding more web graphics to the shop. I LOVE making them!!!
ah, I here my little one chanting "MaMA!! ... MamA!!!" from her room.... naptimes over!
Drop me a line and let me know what you are up to!
:c )

Promote your Etsy Shop!

Ever see those clickable square ad buttons on the sidebar of a blog you are visiting? Wish you had a clickable button ADVERTISING YOUR ETSY SHOP on your own blog? It's a lot more noticeable than a boring old link!
Look no further! I've created these colorful buttons and can put your shop name or "visit my store" (or virtually any small phrase) on one of them. Place it on the sidebar of a blog and you've got a clickable ad that instantly brings customers to your shop or website!!!
They are available in my shop. More designs to come!!!

Kitsch Banner
Artists/Illustrator friends please read! I need your opinion!
I haven't offered this one yet. Offering banners with character design may be something I need to think about a little: once I create a character for a shop it becomes part of the shop identity, and opens up the potential for more business: letterhead, biz cards, tags, stickers, thank-you and postcards etc....
BUT I would want to hold onto the rights of my character. legally. in writing.
That might just be a little heavy for Etsy Sellers looking for a banner!
The other thing is the more I'm doing this graphic stuff the more I am thinking I need to learn Illustrator. I want my characters to look more professional and crisp. Any illustrators out there who care to give me their opinion?

1st Four Banners
OK, I am still alive! I've been VERY BUSY researching and developing a little graphic design business. I am currently in the baby-steps stage.
Here I've created some very basic, affordable, premade banner styles for Etsy. I hope to add semi-custom and premade banners for Blogger as well in the very near future.
This is a very competitive market on Etsy, but I enjoy creating these so I'm going to do them whether it's lucrative or not. I think doing them gets me in the mind-set of composition and design, and it's a perfect way to experiment.
Because of this and because of my mommy responsibilities I have not been able to keep up with the 365 Project, which bums me out but it was so much harder to keep up with than I thought! I think shorter photography projects will be more do-able, and I plan on more photography, as much as I can! I still want to offer prints once I feel I have enough shots that I consider "wall-worthy".
How about you? What have you been working on? I'd love to see it!

FINALLY a shop update!!!
FINALLY an UPDATE to the shop!
I've been thinking about adding some personalized prints for a long time. I finally started tonight, and plan to add more over the course of the next week. It's kind of different from the style I usually work in, I think I'm channeling my inner-graphic-designer here rather than my cartoony style. I've gotta keep mixin' things up, or I get bored, side-tracked and creatively constipated (like I was for the last 2 weeks before I discovered that animation site... have you tried it out yet? OMG it's so fun! If you try it you gotta tell me so I can see your creation! oh, there I go getting sidetracked again...)
anyway, I'm up WAY past my bedtime, so I'll be you a humble adieu!

Thrilling Footage of ME DRAWING!!!
Ooooo Wow! Watch me draw! You'll laugh! You'll cry! You'll be AMAZED! Tell your friends not to miss thie action-packed thriller: "Carolyn Drawing"!!!
Self Portrait- Carolyn Drawing by carolyngallo, made at DoInk.com
I am having WAY too much fun with this site! Let me tell you about it:
The other day I'm checking my email (not one of my favorite tasks!) and I see this one from WACOM. A few months back I purchased a little graphics tablet: a BAMBOO FUN. (Let me just tell you, it was worth EVERY PENNY!!! I don't know how I lived without it!) Anyhoo, I usually delete emails from companies without even reading them (unless I know their including a coupon or something.) I'd never gotten an email from Wacom before, and I'm not sure what prompted me to open it, but I am so glad I did. It was just a little newsletter with some basic info on it, but I noticed the link to Doink.com right away, inviting artists to create little animations for free. OK, since I've been old enough to hold a pencil I've always dreamed of being an animator: a friend and I used to imagine what an absolutely INSANE and FUN job it would have been to work for Warner Bros., specifically Merrie Melodies/Looney Toons back in the hay-day of the 40's & 50's.
Well, here was my chance to animate without having to take classes/ shell out $ for fancy software etc...
It's SO EASY and fun! If you have a wacom you HAVE TO TRY IT!!! You are able to check out other animations by other people (unfortunately heavy on the Anime here) and post to your blog or MySpace or Facebook page. YAY! FUN!
OK, now I gotta go before baby wakes up from her nap.

37/365 Me & My Little Family
Finally a sunny-over-70-degree-day!
This is the extent of my artisticishness today. I spent the greater part of the day playing outside, enjoying the weather.
That is all!

Struggling
I can't seem to focus on WTF I want my paintings to be. I'm having trouble, BIG trouble. I'm feel like I'm wrestling with a couple different things: "what sells" vs. "what comes off the end of my brush". The "what comes off the end of my brush" doesn't really sell, and "what sells" is not "me". Trying to paint what I perceive as marketable just ends up being a pathetic carbon copy modification of everyone else's stuff. So I'm going to go back to crazy painting (probably) and let my brush lead the dance.
I'm just bummed that I wasted a bit of money and some nice wood in the process. Worst case scenario: cover the wood panels with collage so they don't go to waste.
When I get all creatively tense like this it usually means something good will most likely emerge.
Enough whining.
Are you familiar with Anne?
Back in 2005, when I reclaimed my art-making and discovered blogs Anne was one of the first artists I stumbled upon. Well she has upgraded to a new studio. (She's based out of Chicago).
Oh man, I would be on cloud nine with her set-up. Give her blog a visit and check it out!

32/365 Gianna's Pebbles
...she selected each one carefully, and placed them in my hand one by one.
I want to recharge my Etsy shop. I've pretty much been letting it languish in the background while I've been very busy with springtime doings. The yard and garden pretty much took over my time during G's naptimes, because while she's up nothing can get done.
So now the outdoors is pretty much taken care of. and I'd like to spend a little more time drawing and practicing my photography skills. I am very rusty. I want to do a million things at once. I have never been able to relate to artists that can create the same type/style of work over and over. (But at least they are accomplishing something!) I'm awaiting the arrival of some wood panels for painting... and I have 1 or two other things on my agenda: printing on fabric is one of them.
That being said, and her nap just now taking place, I should be drawing and brainstorming, instead of typing here, so TA-TA for now!
